Description

Castle of Tirana

The Castle of Tirana was a Mansio-Mutatio type Egnatia road station. It was the center of a settlement, named after a variety of names in the first centuries of our era. Tirkan (IV century), Tergiana (1297) when the chancellery of its ruler Karli I Anzhu was established, and in today’s form Tyranna (1505) according to Barlet. This toponym has not yet been fully mapped.

But the Castle of Tirana, the most ancient testimony of this city, is located exactly where the old and new roads connecting the capital and then all Albania northward to the south, eastward to the west, were crossed. In the premises of the Tirana Castle there are several traditional houses which have created the style of Tirana’s civic building. Buildings inside the Tirana Castle have inhabited parts of the ruling families of the city and for this reason they are also considered as the first local government buildings in Tirana.
