Description

National Theater

The most important theater institution in Albania, one of the sublime values of Albanian culture, also a national theater school and a major artistic artist in the Albanian space. It is located in the ‘Deshmoret e Kombit’ street (crossing the ‘Shyqyri Ishmi’ street, opposite the Ministry of Interior). The theater had a total of 52 people, out of which 30 actresses, 1 director, 1 deputy director, 1 screenwriter, 1 scene inspector, assistant background (electrician, phonist, carpenter, sculptor), services, administration and others. The most complete personnel achieved before 1991 were a total of 90, of which 60 actresses, 1 director, 4 directors, 1 playwright, 1 screenwriter. Its genesis dates back to May 24, 1944, with the inauguration of the “Pleasure and War” in the Congress of Permet, dubbed the ‘Professional Theater’, but was legalized on 25 May 1945 under the name ‘State Theater’.

The NT building was built in 1939 by Italy as a “Cinema Magazine” in the cultural and entertainment complex ‘Circolo dopolavoro’, where performances for the Italian army and colonies were performed by numerous traveling troops. Later it was called Cinema-Teater ‘Kosova’. In this building, the government took the decision to set up NT. In April 1945, on the occasion of the 2nd Congress of Youth held in Tirana, several theater plays were prepared in different cities of the country. From a special “competent” group of these performances were chosen the most talented actors to create the first professional theater in Albania. Among them were Mihal Popi, Fadil Shiroka, Mihal Stefa, Liza Vorfi, Behije Çela, Gjon Karma, Hasan Reçi, Ndoc Meshkalla, Ndreke Shkjezi, Ndoc Deda etj.

The inauguration and launch of the ‘State Professional Theater’ was done on May 25, 1945, in the existing NT building. Under the direction of Sokrat Mio, with the acting actresses of the Dramatic School on May 30, 1945, appeared the comedy ‘Topaz’ of the French writer Marcel Pagnol, translated by Nonda Bulka, and this was called the founding show. There were 4 shows with 1300 spectators in total. The birth of the National Theater is, of course, a nationally marked event; its path, the synthesis of human, social, political and civic experiences, a place of knowledge and poetry, a laboratory for the elaboration of national consciousness, open doors for the experiences and cultures that have come and continue to come from the world, pride and joy for every Albanian.
